The Chelsea midfielder strode forward on to Paul Scholes’ pass and his 20-yard shot was deflected off Hermann Hreidarsson past Arni Arason.

GOAL 2 – WAYNE ROONEY (27 minutes)

Gary Neville raced on to David Beckham’s throw-in and the full-back cut the ball back to Rooney, who sidefooted home from close range.

GOAL 3 – WAYNE ROONEY (38 minutes)

Lampard and Scholes linked up well before the latter laid the ball off to Rooney 30 yards out, and his shot took a slight deflection to take it past Arason and into the corner.

GOAL 4 – DARIUS VASSELL (57 minutes)

It took England’s ‘second XI’ just 12 minutes to add to the score as Owen Hargreaves’ low shot was blocked by Ingridi Sigurdsson but ricocheted into the net off Vassell.

GOAL 5 – WAYNE BRIDGE (68 minutes)

Nicky Butt’s chip into the box was headed down by Emile Heskey into the path of Bridge, whose angled shot across goal found the corner.

GOAL 6 – DARIUS VASSELL (77 minutes)

The Aston Villa striker got his second and England’s sixth when he played a neat one-two with Heskey before curling a shot past Arason from the edge of the area.
