Dan Castellaneta, who can mimic everyone from Orson Welles to all three Bee Gees, is a native of the Chicago area. An actor since age six, his first voice character was an impersonation of old-time movie star Edward G. Robinson.

He made it on the stage, working in classics like A Midsummer Night's Dream and Taming of the Shrew. He also performed in the Chicago area children's program The Magic Door.

From 1983 to 1987, Castellaneta performed at Chicago's renowned Second City. While there, he learned about improvisation and sliding in and out of characters. Tracey Ullman saw Castellaneta performing at Second City when she was in Chicago. He turned down an offer to be in the Nothing in Common TV series to work with Ullman. Her flexible structure and the chance to play all kinds of characters interested him more; hence he later joined the cast of The Tracey Ullman Show.

A tai chi-practising vegetarian who never drinks beer, Castellaneta may not have very much in common with Homer, but he's sympathetic: ”He's a dumb ox, but he really loves his family so much."
