LEONARD NIMOY WAS TOO SERIOUS
Playing STAR TREK's ultra-serious DR SPOCK wrecked LEONARD NIMOY's social life - because he couldn't enjoy the silly things in life. The actor only smiled in character in the pilot episode of the sci-fi series - because he didn't like the idea of his character being frivolous, but the decision to be serious upset his life away from the set. He says, “Spock smiled in the pilot and I knew it was a mistake. It destroyed the mysticism and the design of the person. I decided he's not necessarily a dour person but he's not necessarily a frivolous person. He was a scientist and a student of what is going on. But then I had a problem with that on weekends. You play a character like that 12 hours a day, five days a week and most of your waking life is in that character. I found it very difficult to turn it on and turn it off. It was very painful.”
