Until King Christian X was 72 years old he rode his horse through Copenhagen, the Denmark´s Capital, without having a bodyguard.
Why did he do that? The answer is that he did it because he loved his country so much.
One story tells that in World War II a German soldier asked a Danish boy why the king behaved this way. The boys answer was: “A king who loves his country as much as him doesn’t need a bodyguard. We Danes would all defense our king.”
When the Nazis took over Denmark, King Christian wanted to do something so Jewish Danes did not have to wear the yellow star. The yellow star was a sign who showed who was and who wasn’t Jewish. Eventually he got an idea. With his idea the Nazis would not know who was Jewish and who wasn’t.
Christian Carl Frederik Albert Alexander Vilhelm of Glücksborg was born on the 26th of September, 1870. Christian was the oldest child of Frederick VII of Denmark and his wife Princess Louise, the only surviving child of King Charles XV of Sweden. In 1905 his brother became King Haakon VII of Norway and Christian the King of Denmark in 1912.
In 1918, when Christian was 48 years old, he also became the King of Iceland. Christian´s habit was to ride through Copenhagen , Denmark´s capital, everyday without having a bodyguard. When Germany invaded Denmark in World War II people wondered if King Christian would continue to ride his horserides. But he did.
Christian is well famous for what he did for the Jews. Christian was sad that Denmark couldn’t manage to fight against the Nazis. His majesty was ,however, determined that they wouldn’t get the best out of Denmark. When the Jewis had to wear the yellow star. King Christian thought a lot about what he could do to protect the Jewish Danes. During that time about 8,000 people in Denmark were of Jewis religion. Eventually he got an idea. He showed his idea to the Danish public when he was riding his horse one morning. He wore the yellow star himself. The story tells that every Dane started to wear the yellow star when they saw their King do it.
In 1942, Adolf Hitler sent the King a long telegram congratulating him on his 72nd birthday. The King’s reply telegram said only: “My best thanks, King Christian”. Hitler became really angry when receiving such a brief and to his interpretation a rude reply.
Same year King Christian fell from his horse and really never got a full recovery again. Five years later on the 12th of October, King Christian died, 76 years old. I think that the story of King Christian is amazing. How brave he was especially to wear the yellow star himself(and he knew that the Nazis might shoot him down). King Christian should be remembered for everything that he did
