22 WAYS TO KILL A MAN WITH YOUR BARE HANDS
Free my hands and I'll varnish this floor with your brains!“
(from ”The Scarlet Citadel“ by Robert E. Howard.)
Sometimes when you are threatened with physical violence, a weapon to
defend yourself with is not always available. Your hands, however, are always with you, and can be as lethal as any weapon. Below are a list of attacks that Police are instructed not employ, as they may prove deadly.
1. TEMPLE - A very susceptible vital spot. If struck with sufficient
force, may cause unconsciousness or death.
2. NASION - This is the summit of the nose. If struck with sufficient
force may cause death.
3. PHILTRUM - This is the area between the upper lip and the bottom of
the nose. Attack to this area may also cause unconsciousness or death.
4. HOOK TO JAW - A powerful hook punch to the front side of jaw may snap an enemy's neck. Fatal.
5. ADAM'S APPLE - A sharp blow here may cause enemy to asphyxiate.
6. SOLAR PLEXUS - The small of back. May cause death.
7. TESTICLES - The strong, focused pain of a vicious low blow may
Cause shock, resulting in death.
8. BASE OF CEREBELLUM - A powerful blow to the nape of the neck, causing mortal damage.
9. COCCYX - A powerful blow to the tailbone. Fatal.
10. FULL NELSON - Stand behind the enemy, put your arms under his, and lock your hands behind his head. Bending the neck forward may either break neck, asphyxiate enemy, or cut of supply of spinal fluid to
Brain, causing brain damage or death.
11. HALF NELSON - Again, standing behind enemy, but one arm is used to pin one of enemy's arms.
12. BRAIN BUSTER - Bend enemy over towards you, placing him in a
Headlock. Grab the back of his belt, and haul him into the air,
vertical, upside-down. Allow yourself to fall backward, landing on
your enemy's head, which will absorb your combined weight. Most
effective on concrete or gravel.
13. RUSSIAN OMELET - Cross enemy's legs. Fold enemy by pinning his shoulders to ground upside-down and placing his legs above him. Sit
on his legs, folding the bass of the spine. Fatal.
14. HEART PUNCH - A strongman's attack, it is simply a powerful blow to the heart. (Many years ago, the wrestler Ox killed an opposing
wrestler with this attack.)
15. UPPERCUT - An upward strike to the bottom of the jaw with the heel of the hand, causing the enemy's head to snap backward. May shatter vertebrae. Fatal.
16. ABDOMEN - A substantial blow to this area may rupture a vital
Organ, causing death.
17. RIB CAGE - A vicious shattering of the rib cage may cause grave
internal bleeding.
18. HEAD-TO-WALL PUNCH - A swift, hard, cold-cock punch to an enemy's face while he is standing near a wall may drive his head into it,
Causing the back of the skull to shatter fatally.
19. PINNED DROP KICK - Standing behind enemy, holding his arms
straight back. A drop kick to the back without releasing arms may
Severe spine, causing death.
20. HEAD WRENCH - Grabbing an enemy's head by the mouth and the back of the skull, then twisting with a sudden, violent jerk to rend
Vertebrae may easily cause death.
21. CHOKEHOLD - Once a favourite of law enforcement officials, has
often proved deadly. The right arm goes over the enemy's right
shoulder, and grips the back of the head. The left arm comes over his
left shoulder, reaches across neck, and grabs own right forearm. With
enough pressure applied, causes brain damage or death.
22. HEAD YANK - Bend enemy forward, grab head, and pull back with
convincing force. May separate delicate vertebrae, causing death.

POWER SIDE KICKING
he problem with most defensive sid e kicks is that they are too slow and too
Tweak. It is quite easy for the attacker to walk right thru the side kick, or block it because they always see it coming.
The reason is that the traditional side kick has a fold and then a snap out. By the time
you fold. The opponent has seen the movement and is ready to block.
The other problem is that a traditional fold and kick side kick has no real power, and
most people are able to walk right thru it or if they are hit, receive no real damage.
The traditional side kick requires that you pick up the leg, fold it and
snap it out. This is very slow and very weak.
The power and speed side kick involves picking the foot directly up and snapping the hips thru
the target. It does not require you to bend the knee. You actually keep the leg straight and when
it gets to the kicking level. You snap the hips and thrust the kick. It is much much more
powerful and twice as fast.
You can practice with a partner
by holding his hand and lifting
the kick directly up and out.

POWER ROUNDHOUSE KICK
he problem with most round ho use kicks is that they are not powerful.
TMost people can block them easily and they don’t do any real damage when they hit. That is why you seldom see them in real fights.
To do a Power Round House. It is necessary that you actually do a Front
Snap Kick and turn it over at the end. In a traditional round house. You bring
the leg up and snap it out. It is almost all a leg kick and has not “hip power”.
In a power round house. You bring the leg straight up like a front snap, and
at the end you turn it over and make it a round house. This kick allows you
to use your hips and legs and all your body weight to smash into the target. It
is much more powerful and very hard to block.
Do not lift the leg and snap out the roundhouse. This has not
real power.
Lift the leg like you are doing a front snap and at the end turn the leg
over for full power.

TOUGHENING THE KNUCKLES WITH PUNCHING
t is important to have tough
Iknuckles in the Martial Arts, and the old way to do that was to
punch the Makawara Board for
hundreds of hours to build up a
callous. This is quite painful and
causes arthritis when one gets older.
The reason that your knuckles hurt
when you punch something hard is that
there is a big tendon on the back of the
knuckle that gets hurt when you hit
something hard. Punching the
Makawara gradually flattens this
tendon, but there is a better, easier way.
SIT ON THE KNUCKLES. All you
have to do is to sit on your knuckles
for about 5 minutes a day, and
gradually you will move the tendon on
the knuckle over and make the knuckle
very tough.
Sit in a cross legged meditation stance
and place the first two knuckles of the
hand on the floor and lift your body off
the floor. Control your mind and
breathing for as long as you can and
then sit back down.

to be rubbed.
DO NOT RUB THE KNUCKLES. This destroys the effects of the exercise.
Take the hands and place them together like you are praying. Then push the
fingers straight up for a stretch, then straight down out in front a stretch. Do this
until the knuckles feel better.

BREAK A BOARD WITH SHUTO NO EFFORT
o break a board using a shuto from o ne inch. You must use a lot of snap and
Tyou must hit with the heel of your shuto. Do not hit with a flat shuto, or the board will not break. You must “pop” your wrist at the end of the strike and hit
with the heel of the hand.
It is very similar to hitting a board with a hammer. If you keep the hammer straight
thru the entire blow, it is not very powerful. But is you snap the hammer at the end of
the blow. The speed increased dramatically and the force 10 fold.
Do not hit with a flat hand. This has no power and hurts the fingers and hand.
Snap the wrist down at the point of impact
and hit with the heel of the hand.
The board will snap easily.

o Knock someone out with a One Inch Punch is quite easy to do but is
DANGEROUS and should not be done for fun or just to practice. TYou use the same snap and hip pop as the punch you use to break a board from 1 inch. It is
important to hit with the heel of the hand directly on the temple.
Place the fingers of

KNOCK ANYONE DOWN WITH ONE FINGER
o knock anyone down with one finger is really quite easy to do. It is a nerve
Tstrike and does not require a lot of strength or speed. All you have to do is press on the nerve. The person will definitely fall to the ground.
Take your index finger and dig it into the collarbone right where the neck meets the
collarbone. It is important that you push back and down. Do not just push down.
When you push back, you expose the nerve and when you push down you paralyze the
nerve, knocking the person down.
You can use a Yawara (or hard pen or pencil) and get even a better effect.
Hold the index finger

of pressure to break.
1. Snap the hips very hard back
2. The harder you punch with the opposite hand the harder you will strike with the
striking hand
3. At the end of the strike “pop” the wrist and hit with the heel of the hand
It is important to “pop” or extend the wrist so that you do not hit with a flat hand, but
with the bone at the heel of the hand
Strike with a shuto

HOW NOT TO BE PUSHED OVER

hese are two very effective and dramatic techniques for a demonstration or
Tstreet use.
The first involves not being able to be pushed over. You can bet anyone that you can
sit on a stool, or on the ground and that the biggest person in the group can not push
you over.
The second technique involves not being able to be lifted off the ground, even by the
strongest person.
Start the demo by sitting on your knees on the ground and having the man push
on your shoulders. It will be very easy for him to push you over.
Now place your hands with the palms facing away from your body, and touch the mans
arms just below the elbows. With the slightest of pressure you push up on his arms. Do
not do it hard enough for him to feel. He will not be able to push you over, because you
have redirected his force to cause him to actually be pushing you down into the ground,
rather than backwards and over.
It is just as easy to do sitting in a chair or on a stool

Now all you have to do to not be
able to be picked up is to touch
him gently right on top of his

Mastering the Knife
Introduction
I began my training in the martial arts over fourteen years ago in the little town of
Alexandria, Louisiana. From the first I was interested in weapons, but I had great difficulty in
finding any but a handful of people who knew anything about weapons. For many years I was
only able to acquire little bits of weapons training from various teachers here and there. I tried
to learn all that I could from books, but found that the number of books on weapons is almost as
short in supply as the number of instructors with a knowledge of weapons. I also found that
most of the books about weapons were written by the same man and were incomplete in their
depth, for no books were available on the tonfa or the yawara, and only a few were available on
the staff, the bo, and the knife. There seemed to be numerous books on the nunchaku, most
poorly done, and a few books on the sai; but all in all the books available for the martial art
student who was interested in weapons were few and far between.
So I decided to write my own books. I spent the last four years doing research and
training with weapons, learning their use and applications. I was able to achieve a fourth degree
black belt in weapons (kubojitsu), I had already written four other books and a movie script,
”The Leopard," so I was familiar with what was necessary to write a good book. I wanted my
book to have techniques that a beginner could learn, but that a teacher could also benefit from.
I wanted to make the book easy to follow by avoiding any overuse of photos or confusing text.
I wanted to include a basic practice Kata for each weapon, as well as techniques for the weapon's
offensive and defensive use. Finally, I wanted to write a book that would serve as a manual on
weapons for years to come-a book that a student or a teacher would be proud to own and would
refer to whenever they had a question on weapons or wanted a new technique.
I feel that I have accomplished all of these goals in this book, The Complete Book of
Karate Weapons. It is a book that I am proud of and one that you can be proud to have in your
library. If you will read this book with an open mind and follow the techniques and exercises
described herein, you can make yourself one of the few experts with weapons in the worldtoday.
I could never have written this book without the help of many friends and fellow martial
artists who appear with me in the instructional photos, both as technique partners and technical
advisers. These men, some of the most outstanding black belts in the South, include:
Keith Yates: fourth degree black belt. Winner of many kata championships and weapons kata
championships at the top tournaments of the South. A master artist who also designed the cover
of the book.
James Toney: fifth degree black belt. Teacher extraordinaire and tournament champion for
many years. One of the most respected teachers in Texas.

Barry Guimbellot: third degree black belt. Probably the most successful teacher in
Dallas, an outstanding example of character and leadership in karate.
Steve Weiss: second degree black belt. A modern jiu-jitsu expert who is also an expert
in karate.
Ross Comerski: first degree black belt. A giant of a man and a giant of a teacher.
Finally, I must thank all of my teachers through my years of training for their help and
knowledge, such great men as: Soke R. Sacharnoski, Soke A. Church, Soke K. Marx, Master
HeYoung Kimm, Shihan B. Pearson, Dr. J. Marler, and Sensi B. Hathorn. These great men and
excellent teachers gave the knowledge and training that enabled me to get to where I am today.
I am forever grateful to them and their arts.
Last, let me take a moment to thank the most important force in my life, my Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ, Who gives me the strength and ability necessary to write this book and to
share my knowledge with my fellow martial artists.
Dedication To Keith Yates, Jim Toney, Barry Guimbellot, Steve Weiss, Russ Comerski,
and Steve Rich, without whom this book would never have been written.

Mastering the Knife
Mastering the Knife
The knife is probably the most common weapon in the world today, because it also
serves as a tool for eating and work. It has been used by men from ancient times for
defense and attack and still remains the favorite weapon of defense today.
The karate knife is a little different from a regular knife because of its construction.
There should be a blade guard for protecting the hand of the user from the blade, as
well as for gripping purposes, and a finger spot which the little finger wraps around when
holding the knife for defense. This finger spot is on the blade, but is smooth and will not
cut the hand. The handle should be very hard, for it is also used for striking, and the blade
should be double bladed at the end, for cutting and slashing forward or backwards, but
not double all the way down, for the protection of the user and for blocks.
The knife is the most dangerous weapon available for the beginner, because it is not just
effective for defense, but can kill you when practicing if you handle it sloppily or
carelessly. Therefore, I suggest that you practice your techniques with a rubber knife until
such time as you are very proficient and a margin of safety is assured. Never joke with the
knife or be foolish. The knife is a deadly weapon and must always be treated with respect.

The basic grip: hold the knife in the hand
with the little finger wrapped around the guard
and in the finger groove provided there.
Now wrap the rest of the fingers around the
handle and extend the thumb down the top with
the fore finger down to the end of the handle.
The blade should be pointed down and extended flat against the side of the forearm.

The knife can be held like this and
concealed almost completely by using
one or two fingers down the handle
(for this photo I have let a little of
the blade show so that you can get
an idea of how I am holding the knife).
To carry the knife behind you,
place it in your belt with the
blade pointed down and the
handle under the belt.
This makes it very easy to reach back and
grab the knife for use.

The modified cat stance: the left
arm is across the body to block
and to hide the knife while the
right hand holds the knife.
The front thrust: the knife is thrusted
straight out in front of the body. Used
for striking the eyes, stomach, groin,
and throat.
The overhead stab: this is a power
stabbing position. The blade should
be pointed up and the thumb on the
back of the handle for support.
The front slash: the knife is held with the blade
out and slashes across the body. Used to cut
the face, chest, back, legs, and arms.

The side slash (backhanded): the
knife is held so that it extends out
the side of the hand. Used for slashing
the body. The palm is facing down,
and the wrist is moving in a
backhand motion.
The forehand slash: the palm faces up here, and
the wrist moves in a forehand motion. Used for
slashing faces and body parts.
The front thrust: the knife is held
straight down the arm, and the
forefinger goes down the side of
the blade for thrusting accuracy.
Used for thrusting into the eyes,
throat, and groin.
The groin stab or underarm stab: the
knife is held with the palm facing up and

This is an excellent and dangerous move that allows the knife to

Begin by holding the knife concealed down your right forearm.
Now punch straight out with the hand as you would in a normal punch.
At the last second, flip the wrist very hard to the left and this will cause the blade of the
knife to corne around and out, for slashing the throat or eyes.

Throwing the Knife
There are several different methods used for throwing the knife, but the most practical
one is to use an overhand throwing motion with the knife and let it flip over and then go
into the target area.
Hold the knife so that it is balanced on your forefinger; this is the point at which the knife
can be controlled most easily. A good knife should be balanced properly.
Now throw the knife in an overhand motion, just like you were throwing a ball.
With much practice you will be able to hit a very small target.

INTRODUCTION
This book has been written as a training and
information manual for people and students who may
find that they have to defend themselves in the street
from attack by those who may have such weapons as
knives, bats, clubs, broken bottles, chains, or all of the
above.
It is intended to be a training manual not in how to use
the weapons of the street, but rather in how to defend
your- self against unwarranted and unnecessary attack.
There are a few instructions in offensive techniques, but
they are meant to be used to control the attacker till the
police come or till help can arrive.
I do not condone nor intend that this book be a manual
for those who would use weapons in the street to harm
their fellow man for any reason.

I. CLUB DEFENSES
Defenses against a club, a stick or a bat are essentially
the same. The only difference is the size or weight of the
attacking weapon. A bat may weigh a few pounds, a
stick a pound and a club up to five pounds. But all are
uniform in that they are under four feet long, and
usually swung with one hand at the intended victim.
Therefore our defenses will be the same, in that we will
be attempting to block the arm doing the swinging, and
avoid getting hit with the club or bat. If you attack the
joints and the arm, you can prevent the club from
gaining power and thus stop most attacks before they
can do damage.

Defense 1: You find yourself attacked with an overhand
strike by a punk with a club. You stop the attack by
stepping in with a high forearm block to the arm of the
attacker.

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
Now reach under and lock your arm into your left and
grasp his right wrist. This will enable you to throw the
ground.
There you can finish him with a strong attack to the
throat.

Defense 2: You are about to be attacked by a club.
Stand ready and as soon as the attacker starts to move
to you stop the swinging arm with a side grasping block
using your left arm.

Now continue your motion around his body grasping
his hips, and pick him up for a hip throw.
Throw him to the ground, keeping control of his hand,
and stomp your heel into his groin to finish h

Defense 3: You find yourself being choked from behind
with a straight bar choke using a club. Quickly tighten
the muscles of your neck, and reach up and grab the
club and pull down very hard to relieve the choking.

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
While the attacker's concentration is on your pulling
down, change your motion and strike back with a hard
elbow strike into his stomach, then immediately up with
a fore knuckle strike to his teeth.
Now you can turn your body and grab his head and
smash it with your knee, knocking him to the ground
and finishing him with a hard strike to the throat.

Offensive 1: For use if you should find that you must
use a club to defend yourself, preferably after you have
taken it from the attacker, or if more than one man is
attacking you.
Strike his attacking
arm with a hard
swing of the club
right into the elbow
area. Now twirl the
club around and
under his arm,
which will lock it up
and allow you to
lock it behind his
back. Hold his wrist
hard-to keep the
arm lock.

You may finish him by pulling up very hard and
breaking his arm.

Offensive 2: You block his right arm attack with a left
fore- arm block and then smash the club directly onto
his kneecap.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
You may then smash the club into his groin and step
around his back, keeping the club in front of his body
and allowing you to gain complete control and walk him
to the police or for help.

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
Offensive 3. Chokes. Chokes are a very effective means
of keeping control of a man until the police or help
arrive. NOTE: Be sure to use control and caution when
practicing chokes as they are very deadly.
The half nelson choke: Place the club across his neck,
holding one end with your right hand. Now place the
other end of the club into your left elbow and place your
palm around the back or his head; by pulling with your
right hand you can easily choke him out.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
The full nelson choke: This time the club is placed
between the elbows of both arms, and both palms are
placed on the back of the head; by pressing forward,
you easily choke him out.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
The X choke: Place the club in front of his neck, and
cross your arms in back so that your right hand is over
his left shoulder and your left hand is over his right
shoulder. Now by leaning forward and pulling back you
can choke him out. This is your most powerful and
dangerous choke, so be extremely cautious when using
it.
NOTE: I am not showing offensive techniques with the
club in this book of street weapons. If you want to learn
them please refer to my book of karate weapons. What I
will show are a few offensive techniques that will allow
you to control the attacker till the police or help arrive.

Karate defense against a club: If you have sufficiently
trained your hand you can easily do the following
defense against a club. It requires speed and timing; do
not try it if you don't have both of these qualities.
As the attacker strikes at you, quickly block the attack
with a rising, grasping block and hold the club firmly.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

Then with lightning speed and devastating power you
break the club in half Take the end in your hand, twirl
around and smash his head, then up quickly with a side
kick to finish him.

2. CHAIN DEFENSES
The chain is a deadly weapon that requires speed and
agility to defend yourself against. You must move
before the attacker gets too much momentum and must
try not to let the chain gain too much speed before you
stop the attack.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET
Copyright 2001 Dr. Ted Gambordella
http://www.martialartsweapons.net
Defense 1: You are attacked by a punk with a chain. As
he starts his swing at you, you quickly duck your head
to let the chain fly by. Now before he can pull the chain
back across his body you jump in with a forearm block
and grab his arm controlling the chain.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

Now lock his arm up over your left shoulder and with a
hard downward pull you can break his elbow to finish
him.

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
Defense 2, You are attacked with a chain and you duck
down again and let it fly by.
As he comes back for another swing you step in and
block with a double forearm block to his arm, not the
chain. Stop the arm, and that will stop the chain.

You now quickly swing your right leg up and into his
groin, and your elbow down into his ribs. Continue your
motion, step around to his back, and strike
the back of his neck to break it.

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
Defense 3: You are attacked with a chain and you
quickly step back and duck and then spring up a front
snap kick into his face. Note: If you can't kick that high,
snap a kick into his groin.

Now turn and finish him with a strong back kick to his
heart area.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
Offensive 1: Close up of position for holding chain for
mort control.
I find the best
offense a good
defense. An attacker
can't block your
weapon if he is in
the middle of an attack, so
always let him move at you first and then counter with
your weapon. If he does not attack, you can walk away
or go get help. He swings at you and you sidestep and
smash the chain into his ribs. Now flip the chain up and
over his neck.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

You can then step behind and secure the choke, and a
quick downward pull will throw him to the ground
where you can hold him till help arrives.

Offensive 2: As he starts to attack you counter with a
hard front snap to the groin or stomach
area.

Offensive 3: You swing at him and as he steps back to
duck, you quickly drop to one leg and swing the end of
the chain around his lower leg, allowing it to wrap itself
around and secure his leg, which you can then yank out
from under him, throwing him to the ground where you
can finish him with a groin stomp.

Defense 2: The attacker comes at you with a stab to the
midsection. You block down with an X block using
both hands and then grasp his wrist with both hands.

towards the ground, then you can turn and smash a heel

blocks with a forearm block. Before he can react you
can flip the arm over and stab his groin.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
Offensive 2: You are attacked with a right punch, which
you block with a rising left forearm block, and then
counter by taking the bottle over and cutting open the
back of his hand, rendering it useless.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

http://www.martialartsweapons.net
Offensive 3: The best way to use the bottle is to show an
attacker that he will lose his face if he does not come to
the police or come with you, so hold the back of his head
by controlling his neck and place the bottle -in front of
his eyes so he can see it and realize he better not mess
up.

4. KNIFE DEFENSES
A jacket serves as a very good defense against a knife,
but a jacket is not made of steel and will not stop a knife
blade from cutting you. You must use the jacket as a
shield and to stop the arm, not to stop the blade of the
knife.
Defense 1: The attacker starts to draw his knife from
his pocket. Before he
can get the knife out,
step back and take
your jacket off your
right arm (keeping it
on your left arm),

and then flipping it over and over till it wraps around
your left arm, all the time backing up to keep him a safe
distance away from you.

Now block his stab with a rising forearm block and
counter with a smash of your foot into his groin. Then
you can finish him with a smash of your knee into his
face.

Defense 2: You are about to be attacked and as he comes at you you step back and this
time take the jacket off of both of your arms behind your back.
WEAPONS OF THE STREET

head and throw him to the ground where
you can finish him with a heel stomp
to his groin.

smash of the hand to the groin.

hands. Swing the belt around his forearm and allow it to wrap around his arm.

You can then finish him with a strike to the throat and a kick to the groin.
NOTE: These defenses may look like showmanship, but if you try them a few times
you will see that they actually work, for the man holding you is concerned
only with stop- ping you from getting away forward, so you can easily jump
in the air, or bend over, or even sidestep.

Defense 5: You are attacked by a man with a club and a man with a tire tool. You have a
club for your defense also.
Block the attack of the club with a two-handed overhead rising block, and at the same
time smash a side kick into the ribs of the man with the tire tool, sending him to the
ground.

groin.

6. THREE MAN DEFENSES
When you find yourself surrounded by three men, the best thing to do is run. If you can't,
always try to protect your back, keeping it toward the wall.
Defense 1: As the men move to you smash a back kick into the stomach of the man on
your left.
