29. Denver Nuggets: No McDyess. No Van Exel. No hope. At least, they will have cap room to lure some important free agent next summer.
28. Cleveland Cavaliers: Yet another season devoted to rebuilding in Cleveland. No surprise that Ilgauskas has started drinking.
27. Golden State Warriors: They have some young talent, but team chemistry is still a concern. How will Jamison perform when facing Tim Duncan or Kevin Garnett playing the four spot?
26. Memphis Grizzlies: The Grizzlies appear to have a good foundation. Anyway, Jerry West should make some big tricks in order prevent his team from being one of the worst in the league.
25. Chicago Bulls: The only way is up for the Bulls. With Jay Williams and Jalen Rose, they could win 30 games for the first time since MJ first retired.
24. Miami Heat: Any room for optimism in Miami vanished into thin air when the Heat knew Zo would be out for the season. This is likely to be the second year without playoffs for Pat Riley.
23. New York Knicks: The Knicks are bigger and more talented with the addition of Antonio McDyess, but Scott Layden still needs to address some more needs in the team.
22. Milwaukee Bucks: They may have traded not only Glenn Robinson, but also a playoff spot to Atlanta. The Bucks really need Ray Allen to be healthy.
21. Phoenix Suns: It's a rebuilding process in Phoenix. If Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudemire develop fast enough, the process could last shorter than expected.
20. Atlanta Hawks: With the addition of Glenn Robinson, the Hawks should move to the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference – assuming that Theo Ratliff is healthy.
19. Orlando Magic: Will Shawn Kemp deliver? Will Grant Hill play more than 14 games? Orlando remains a big question mark.
18. Philadelphia 76ers: If Allen Iverson skips practice less often, Keith Van Horn plays focused and Derrick Coleman is healthy, they can do something interesting. Those are very big “ifs”, though.
17. Houston Rockets: The talent is there, but talent is not enough to make it in the Western Conference. Defense and rebound are still concerns – and none of them are Yao's main strengths.
16. Toronto Raptors: The team appears to be a little weaker. But Vince's play should be much stronger, and that changes the whole perspective.
15. Washington Wizards: Get ready for some poor shooting and some more Ws in Washington. The addition of Jerry Stackhouse and Larry Hughes really upgrades the team backcourt.
14. Utah Jazz: For the first time in an awful lot of years, there is a legit chance that the Jazz fail to make the postseason. Donyell Marshall for Matt Harpring? Ouch.
13. Detroit Pistons: With Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton, perimeter shooting should no longer be a problem. With Stack gone, they may lose some leadership and competitive fire.
12 .Boston Celtics: It is said you need a good point guard and a good center to make a good team. The Celtics have none of that, but they still have Pierce and Walker.
11. Seattle SuperSonics: Most teams will toy with their big men, but the Sonics will have one of the best backcourts in the league if Rashard Lewis and Desmond Mason keep improving.
10. Indiana Pacers: Isiah Thomas has the tools to make an Eastern Conference contender out of the Pacers. Lack of experience will no longer be an excuse.
9. Minnesota Timberwolves: Kevin Garnett and Wally Szczerbiak need their teammates to step up in order to reach the next level.
8. New Orleans Hornets: One through five, the Hornets have quite a talented squad. The home crowd will be more supportive in New Orleans.
7. Los Angeles Clippers: Andre Miller led the league in assists last season with not much talent around. The Clippers have plenty of that. Making the playoffs is a must.
6. Portland Trail Blazers They have a lot of very good players, but no superstars. Arvydas Sabonis will be welcomed back in Portland.
5. New Jersey Nets: Dikembe Mutombo will make it easier for the Nets to run the break thanks to his rebounding skills.
4. San Antonio Spurs Look for the Spurs to be one of the most exciting teams in the league with Tony Parker and Emanuel Ginobili in the starting lineup. MVP Tim Duncan will be of some help, too.
3. Dallas Mavericks The Mavs should trade some offensive talent for defensive toughness in order to be an even more competitive team.
2. Los Angeles Lakers: The Lakers didn't improve in the offseason. The future of the team largely rests on Shaq's toe.
1. Sacramento Kings: The Kings will be bigger, more athletic and more experienced this season. They have a really good shot at the title.
