VIEIRA - WHY I HAVE TO GO
Patrick Vieira says he wants to leave Arsenal because he needs a new challenge after five years at Highbury.
His agent Marc Roger said much the same thing last week, but this is the first time that the player himself has been quoted this summer as saying he wants to leave north London.
The midfielder, currently on holiday in the United States, said: “I told Arsene Wenger and David Dein I was not going to renew my contract for a third time.
”This is not about Arsenal, or money, but about my personal ambitions as a player.
“I felt, and people should respect this, that I need a new challenge after five years at the club.”
The Sunday Mirror claims the 25-year-old had informed The Gunners of his desire to leave the following their UEFA Cup final defeat by Galatasaray a year ago.
According to the paper, Vieira was persuaded to stay on for one more season, but had a verbal agreement with the club that he would be allowed to leave, if he still wanted to, at the end of the following season, which finished in May.
“I expect Arsenal to stand by a verbal agreement they have with me and I expect this to be sorted out before I return from my holiday,” the Frenchman confirmed.

VIEIRA SPEAKS OUT OVER ARSENAL EXIT
by Stephen Bateman
PATRICK VIEIRA has broken his silence on the reasons why he wants to leave Arsenal, saying that he is keen to seek a new challenge.
The midfield star has been the subject of intense media speculation over the past few weeks, with some reports going as far as to suggest that he has already signed a pre-contractual agreement with Italian giants Juventus.
Vieira claims that he told Gunners chiefs that he would be quitting the club over a year ago and says that he is bemused as to why there has been so much controversy over his desire to leave Highbury.
“I don't know why there is so much fuss. What is it all about?” he queried.
“I had a meeting with Asrene Wenger and the club's vice-chairman David Dein two days before I went on holiday to America.
”I told them I was not going to renew my contract for a third time, that I wanted to leave and that it was nothing to do with money because that was not an issue to me.
“This is not about Arsenal, but about my personal ambitions as a player. I feel, and people should respect this, that I need a new challenge after five years at the club.
”I feel if I go to a new environment I can raise my game to a new level. I expect Arsenal to stand by a verbal agreement they have with me and I expect this to be sorted out before I return from my holiday.“
Arsenal continue to insist that Vieira must honour his current contract, however, which runs until the summer of 2004, but a close friend of the Frenchman issued the club with a stark warning.
”Patrick is not afraid to go on strike if he has to,“ he said.
”As far as he's concerned he has played his last game for the club, and he will never kick a ball for them again.“
Manchester United are believed to be one of the clubs whose interest will be aroused by the latest developments at Highbury and it now looks as if they could be set to scrap it out with Juventus for his coveted signature.

Vieira confirms Arsenal exit desires
Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira has broken his silence surrounding his future after finally admitting he wants to leave Highbury.
The French international's future at Highbury has been under the microscope all summer after reports suggested he wanted to leave the club after they finished trophy-less for the third successive season.
Although the club initially denied the reports, even issuing a statement on the player's behalf, his agent claimed on Saturday that Vieira did want to leave The Gunners. Although there has been plenty of speculation over the player's Highbury career, Vieira himself has kept quiet on all talk surrounding his future, though now he has finally come out and admitted he wants to leave the club.
So determined is he to quit Highbury, some reports suggest he is willing to go on strike in order to secure a move away from the club.
Vieira, though, seems desperate to secure a move and he said: ”I don't know what all the fuss is about. I had a meeting with Arsene Wenger and the club's vice-chairman David Dein two days before I went on holiday to America.
“I told them I was not going to renew my contract for a third time, that I wanted to leave and that it was nothing to do with money because that was not an issue to me.
”This is not about Arsenal, but about my personal ambitions as a player. I feel, and people should respect this, that I need a new challenge after five years at the club.
“I feel if I go to a new environment I can raise my game to a new level. I expect Arsenal to stand by a verbal agreement they have with me and I expect this to be sorted out before I return from my holiday,” he told the Sunday Mirror.
It has been claimed that Vieira first told Arsenal he wanted to leave last summer, though was persuaded by Wenger and Dein to stay for a further season in a bid to land the top honours. However, after finishing as runners-up in both the Premiership and FA Cup, and crashing out of the Champions League at the quarter-finals stage, Vieira has now claimed he has kicked his last football for The Gunners. Manchester United remain keen, though it is unlikely Arsenal will sell their prized asset to their title rivals and a £25million switch to Juventus looks the most likely outcome at this stage.
