ROME, Nov 29 (Reuters)(DS) - Parma thrashed Inter Milan 6-1 in
an Italian Cup quarter-final first leg match on Wednesday to
hand Marco Tardelli's side one of the worst defeats in their
history and compound a dismal start to the season.
Inter had not suffered a five-goal defeat since they lost a
Milan derby in the same competition on January 8, 1998. They had
not conceded six goals in any competition for years.
They have now lost nine of their last 10 matches at Parma,
who are unbeaten in the Italian Cup since June 1995.
The Milan giants, who have not won a domestic trophy for 11
years, were knocked out of the Champions League by Sweden's
Helsingborg in August and are ninth in Serie A with just three
wins from eight matches.
Parma's goals came from six players of six nationalities.
Argentine midfielder Nestor Sensini (18), France's Johan
Micoud (33), Colombian teenager Johnnier Montano (34) and
Brazilian striker Amoroso (39) put the result beyond doubt well
before halftime.
Uruguayan Alvaro Recoba then pulled a goal back for Inter
before the break with a superb left foot volley from 25 metres.
But Inter's defence was still shocking in the second half
and Ghana's Stephan Appiah scored Parma's fifth in the 53rd
minute after fine approach work from Montano and Amoroso.
Italian Luigi Sartor – a former Inter player – rubbed salt
into his ex-side's wounds by adding a sixth in the 61st minute
after a woeful misunderstanding between the visiting defenders.
TARDELLI TIGHT-LIPPED
Inter coach Marco Tardelli declined to speak to reporters
immediately after the match but was given a show of support from
Parma manager Alberto Malesani.
“One of the worst moments of my career was when we lost 5-1
at Inter in the first half of last year's championship,”
Malesani recalled.
“I'd just like to tell Marco Tardelli to stay calm, ignore
the critics, don't read the newspapers and concentrate on the
job. I'm giving him that advice because Marco's a friend.”
Parma's stunning victory completed a fine week for them.
On Sunday they beat defending champions Lazio in the
championship to move into sixth place in the table.
Lazio, eager to bounce back from that setback, needed two
goals in the last five minutes to beat nine-man Udinese 2-1 in
their quarter-final first leg match.
The comeback was a relief for their Swedish coach Sven Goran
Eriksson, under pressure following a shaky start to the season
and his announcement he will leave to manage England in July.
The champions trailed to a goal by Massimo Margiotta in the
48th minute of a largely pedestrian tie at the Olympic Stadium.
But when Udinese captain Valerio Bertotto was sent off in
the 74th minute for a late challenge on Fabrizio Ravanelli –
his second bookable offence – Lazio seized the initiative.
Yugoslav Dejan Stankovic pulled them level in the 86th
minute with a looping header from a Pavel Nedved cross and a
minute later Nedved picked up the ball on the edge of the
penalty area and fired a crisp low shot into the bottom left
hand corner of Morgan De Sanctis's net.
Udinese's Argentine striker Roberto Carlos Sosa was
dismissed two minutes from time for elbowing Lazio's Portuguese
defender Fernando Couto as the two fought for an aerial ball.
