Since 1946 Carvin has been building and selling high quality and highly regarded musical instrument products direct to the consumer. Founded in 1946 by Lowell Kiesel, Carvin started by selling guitar pickups that became the favorites of country and guitar instrumental heroes of the day. Surf music legends, The Ventures, used Carvin pickups in their Moserite guitars in the ‘60s. The product line also include Hawaiian lap steel guitars as well as unique double neck designs, guitar amps and bass amps. Carvin is a true part of American musical history as the company predates the invention of rock n’ roll!

The 80's must have been an exciting time to work at Carvin. The decade started with two basic models, the DC150 and CM140, plus the newly redesigned doubleneck series, and only two finishes, but by the time the decade ended, there were 11 models, a variety of finishes, electronics, hardware and other options. Many of the design features and construction methods would still be in use on modern Carvins - things such as neck-thru design, premium ebony fingerboards, and the DC200 body style would remain popular and in use to this day, which proved that Carvin was on the right track when they pioneered many of these items. Other features, such as bright pearl colors, doublenecks, and the V guitars would make a huge splash, sell like crazy, then begin to fade away as the decade ended.

The 90's saw many changes at Carvin. The X and V guitars and doubleneck guitars would be retired after their successful run in the 80's. However, many new models would be added - the Bolt, Holdsworth, TL series, 7-stringers, hollowbodies and acoustic/electrics. On top of that, Carvin officially launched the Custom Shop, which allowed customers to create their own guitar from thousands of combinations of woods, finishes, hardware and electronics.
The marketing would go through a variety of changes, as well, from landscape-oriented guitar-only catalogs, to the modern, smaller catalog in use today.
In 1996, Carvin would celebrate it's 50th Anniversary, and would release an Anniversary model guitar to commemorate the event. Also in the 90's, Carvin would pack up, and relocate to their current state-of-the-art facilities in San Diego.
Carvin was far ahead of the curve with their Internet presence. As early as 1996, they had a website, which was originally called CarvinGuitars.com . Although this site was primarily a marketing tool, used to show basic products and collect catalog requests, it was more than many manufacturers were doing at the time.

This little thing called the Internet took off in the latter part of the nineties, and Carvin started to fully exploit it in 1999, and by the two-thousands, it was a full-blown marketing tool. The original website, carvinguitars.com, was primarily a marketing tool, used to collect catalog requests. But in ‘99, Carvin launched a fully interactive site featuring all their models, reviews, on-line ordering and many other features.
A big plus to the website was the listing of “Guitars-in-Stock”. Although Carvin is noted for building instruments that are custom ordered, they also build instruments to sell in their shops in southern California. So, there are usually a couple of hundred pre-built and ready ship instruments for those who have “buy fever”, and don’t want to wait the 2 months to have a custom built instrument.
One of the most revolutionary features on the new website was the Virtual Custom Shop. This was unique in the industry, and gave guitarists and bassists the ability to see what each model looked like, in any configuration of wood and finish. With over 50 finish/wood combinations, it was simply not practical to include pictures of every feasible combination in the catalog, but the Virtual Custom Shop allowed Carvin to show everything off.
