Nr.1:
1. NiP (Heaton, Ahl, Potti, Hyb, Medion, XeqtR and Vesslan)
We all knew it was coming - they won the greatest match in the history of Counter-Strike, and weren't half bad leading up to it. I know every American might take offense to this, but the simple fact is that back then Europe was better. Beyond X3, no one was even close to the Europeans. Out of the top 5 finishers at the World Championships of 2001 four of the five were European.
Trust me, more would have placed higher if they could have attended. By most accounts, the European qualifiers for CPL were often more competitive then the CPL final events. Therefore, when I say NiP won CPL Holland (under the SoA.se name), CPL London and CPL Berlin during 2000-2001, consider that fact. There has been no more dominant team in the history of CS then NiP was. NiP's victories were complete; every European that I talked to who faced NiP back then agreed.
Here are some statistics for people who need help understanding. During their two CPL European victories (London and Berlin), which we have rounds won/lost information for, NiP was 116-30. Back then, matches were played with Charges Only, meaning only the offensive team's rounds counted as a point. What this means is that NiP won 116 offensive rounds during those two tournaments, while only losing 30 defensive rounds. We have no way to know how many defensive rounds they won on top of that 116 either. Simply put - they crushed people.
Again, don't take my word for it. Why do you think when the players left SK.swe in 2004 they were so interested in bringing back NiP's name? The legacy of the team is an institution; they were the Yankees of Counter-Strike. That alone gives them impact points. Adding on to that, you have to consider what happened to the players on this team. Vesslan went on to lead Nordic/Team9, Heaton and Potti with the help of Ahl later created SK.swe, while XeqtR has been a part of NoA, eoL, Team9, and SK.sca with others playing a critical role in each. Positive impact on Counter-Strike, to say the least.
Finally, one last comment about the World Championships CPL Winter 2001 and the match with X3; this match gave NiP one thing none of the other teams had, a true rival. The current coL against 3D rivalry is extremely fun and will continue to develop, but we are talking deep rivalry. European against American (a hot topic at the time), Old style of play (X3) versus new style of play (NiP), AWP (X3) versus Rifles (NiP). All of it created tension which played out in an amazing match.
On top of that, both teams were as dominant as I have talked about. X3 was untouchable leading up to the match with two CPL wins; NiP was the same with three more CPL wins. By winning that match, NiP justified that they were not only the best team, but also the best team over the past year and change, by their combined domination of the world. This makes them the best team in the history of the game.
