Spyware destroys your aim [bottom]

Not many are aware of the fact that perfect internet connection is not only dependent on the right netcode and enough bandwidth. Another major factor nowadays is spyware that come with certain ad based freeware. They are also called transponders and they transmit personal information about email addresses, name, system configuration and installed software. Some programs like the VX2a even records and send passwords and credit cards numbers to encrypted servers.

A symptom of spyware:
The most known symptoms of spyware are popups that occur at random. Another result is where the default homepage is hijacked. Iehelper.dll is one of those and it records all urls and trigger ads for similar sites. This file can be installed via activex without authorisation.

Iehelper.dll:
The Iehelper.dll sense all traffic into the computer and I think that it also can be the cause of timerelay in games like Counter-Strike of sometimes 1-2 seconds. If you have this file on your windows system it will cause delays on websites. All the information on the site is fetched at the normal rate but it will show up as a delay of sometimes 1-2 seconds to display all the elements. (pics etc.) A delay that in CS is similar up to 2000 ms in latency. Caution: Do not go and delete any Iehelper.dll file that you have on your system. Some may be total legitimate ! Use the spyware removal tools to do the job for you.

Ad-Aware:
Ad-ware are junk and Ad-Aware from lavasoftusa will definitely help you get rid of this. Ad-Aware will _not_ install spyware on your system. In the past Ad-Aware has seen an example of a spyware that actually removed Ad-Aware before installing itself. As a precaution make certain you get Ad-Aware from their homepage and not from others not endorsed by Lavasoftusa. Spyware programmers may even try to fool some into downloading a fake Ad-Aware program. They will go at any lengths as to get their spyware on your system and if they can discredit Ad-Aware in the process it would be a gain from their point of view.

About Gator / GAIN:
Gator offers help to fill in forms with your data, but it will also install an adserve program called OfferCompanion. Gator is bundled with various software but is not installed completely by default. According til Counterexploitation (<A HREF="http://www.cexx.org/gator.htm ">http://www.cexx.org/gator.htm </A> ) Gator installs something called Trickler that runs in the background and uses very little bandwidth to download and install the rest of Gator. That way it should they hope to slip by your attention. Gator also calls itself GAIN nowadays.

Also do not use Cnet´s ´fast download´ found at Download.com and Gamespot.

It´s a peer-to-peer program called Kontiki p2p that continously runs in the background using your bandwidth.

A precaution:
Spyware like the VX2a collects email addresses from outlook and you can help stopping this malpractice by setting up an false email address as the default account in your email client. VX2a collects and immediately transmits data after installation. By setting up a fake email address you will make it less profitable for spammers to use this technique. Of course the next step could the spammers could be making is a program that is able to collect more than one mail address. But at least in some countries that is illegal and an invasion of privacy.

Different names for spyware:
Scumware - that display ads on top of ads on a competitor site to redirect surfers. Toptext and Gator are examples.
Transponder - sends user traffic data to server to display similar pop-ups
