Kate Garry Hudson fæddist 19 apríl, 1979 í Los Angeles í Caleforníu. Hún ólst upp með leikonuni Goldie Hawn og eiginmanni hennar leikaranum Kurt Russel en pabbi hennar er grínistinn og söngvarinn Bill Hudson.

Fyrsta alvöru hlutverkið hennar í kvikmynd var í myndinni Desert blue (1998) en hún var samt búin að leika áður í mynd sem hét Wildcats með mömmu sinni þegar hún var sjö ára og í einhverjum Party of five þætti. Næstu tvær myndirnar hennar voru aðeinst stærri en Desert Blue og það voru 200 Cigarettes (1999) og Gossip (2000). En hlutverkið sem gerði hana að stórstjörnu var hlutverk hennar sem Penny Lane í Almost famous (2000). Hlutverkið var upprunalega ætlað Söruh Polley. En þegar Sarah hætti við og Cameron var að pæla í að hætta við myndina bað Kate sem var komin með smærra hlutverk sem systir Williams um að fá að lesa fyrir hlutverkið og hann réð hana.
Penny Lane var án efa hlutverkið sem gerði Kate að stórstjörnu og hún hlaut the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award fyrir best breakthrough preformance og the Golden Satellite Award fyrir besta aukaleikona og einnig Golden globe verðlaun fyrir það sama. En hún hlaut einnig þrenn önnur verðlaun fyrir sama hlutverkið.

Kate er gift Chris Robinson söngvara the Black Crowes. En hún var einusinni með Elijah Craig. Bróðr hennar Oliver Hudson er einnig leikari og leikstjóri/handritshöfundur. Kate hefur aldrei verið mjög náin við pabba hennar Bill Hudson en henni finnst Kurt Russel vera hennar sanni pabbi.

Kate elskar súkkulaði eins og flest allir og lýsir sér sem smá hippa. Hún elskar Miles Davis og John Coltrane. Uppáhalds hljómvsveitirnar hennar eru Led Zeppelin og Rolling stones.
