The largest of the empires in the world of EVE, Amarr spans 40% of the inhabited solar systems. The Amarr Emperor is the head of a ritualistic, authoritarian imperial state, and below him are the Five Heirs, the heads of the five royal families from which a new Emperor is chosen. The Emperor's authority is unquestioned and absolute, but the archaic and bureaucratic system of government makes it difficult for him to exert his rule unless directly in person. Otherwise, the Five Heirs rule in his name, dividing the huge empire between them.
The Emperor and the Five Heirs can expect to live for at least 500 years. Extensive cyber-implants keep their frail bodies alive, even when their organs begin to fail. These cyber-enhancements date back many millennia, and have become a symbol of royal divinity in the eyes of the Amarrians.
Always a deeply religious people, religion remains of great importance to every Amarrian, a fervour which at various times has been responsible both for great good and great evil. Shortly after recovering from the closure of EVE, they began to expand their realm at the expense of neighbouring states. The nations they conquered were enslaved, a practice justified by their religion. Ever since, the Amarrians have enslaved every nation and race they have encountered, and today slavery is an essential part of Amarr society. This has, of course, tainted their relations with other races, especially the individualistic Gallenteans.
The Amarrians were the first of the races in EVE to re-discover Warp technology, notably Jump gate technology. After accomplishing this more than 2,000 years ago, they immediately began expanding to nearby solar systems, slowly building up their empire in the process. On the way, they encountered two human races, both of whom suffered the fate of being enslaved by the far more powerful Amarrians.
In recent years, however, the Amarrians have begun to run into serious opposition. First, they met the Gallente Federation. Although much smaller than the Amarr Empire, the Amarrians soon found the economic and military might of the Gallenteans a match for their own.
Soon after, the Jovians arrived on the scene and the Amarrians made a futile attempt to subjugate them, resulting in a humiliating defeat. To make matters worse, the Minmatars, enslaved for centuries by the Amarrians, used the opportunity to rebel against their slave-masters.
Since these fateful events almost two centuries ago, the Amarrians have learned restraint. They have slowed down their expansion and are less forceful in their dealings with other races, but still view themselves as the most powerful race in EVE, if only because of their sheer numbers.

The Heirs
The most powerful figure in the Amarr Empire is of course the emperor himself. His words are laws and his state domination is complete. Yet, in effect, the emperor only directly rules where he is at any given moment. The entrenched bureaucracy and the semi-feudal governing system means that all over the empire there are local lords that enjoy almost complete autonomy most of time. The most powerful of these lords are the Five Heirs, the heads of the five main royal families, the ones that a new emperor is chosen from. Each of the heirs’ rules over a vast domain, stretching over dozens of solar systems. The power of the heirs can best be seen in the way each of them shapes their domain after his own wishes. The result is that the Amarr Empire is a patchwork of rules and regulations, customs and traditions.
Taken together the Five Heirs have tremendous influence in Amarr society. They make up the Privy Council, the most powerful institution next to the emperor. As individuals they are only rivaled by the Imperial Chamberlain in power and authority below the emperor himself. The heir families, the royal families of the Five Heirs, have the highest status in the noble hierarchy of the Holders. Four of the current royal families are the original families given the royal status almost 1500 years ago. The fifth is a recent addition after the Khanid-family was exiled. The five current families are: the Ardishapur-family, the Kador-family, the Kor-Azor family, the Sarum family and the Tash-Murkon family (the new family). The heads of three of these families are introduced below, the heads of the other two families are Temal Kador and Davit Tash-Murkon.
Doriam is the only heir to openly discuss the possibility of reaching an agreement regarding the Minmatar situation by recognizing the Minmatar Republic as a sovereign state. Doriam is also alone among the heirs to have visited the Gallente Federation; his visit there five years ago was highly successful and made him many friends and admirers. He is a charming and diplomatic man, a competent administrator and a resourceful military leader. He governs his realm with a benevolent hand, slaves for instance are treated well (at least by Amarrian standards). Yet he should neither be taken as weak-hearted or feeble-minded, he has shown on many occasion that he can be both ruthless and courageous when circumstances call for it. Many consider Doriam the most likely of the five heirs to succeed to the throne and become the next Amarr Emperor once the current one dies. But he has many enemies and his liberal views are not popular in many quarters.
The Ardishapur has always been considered the most religious of the royal families, but the religious fervor shown by Idonis astonishes even members of that family. Like most high-class youths Idonis was destined to study in the best SCT schools, but he was denied entrance due to his absolute belief in Amarr customs and laws. Idonis is tradition personified, still today he steadfastly beliefs that the Amarr way of living is the only right one and openly scorns and rejects all other beliefs. He is very devoted in his faith and to many religious Amarrians he is their true spiritual leader, some have even went so far as to call him a new messiah. As could be expected Ardishapur’s domains are very backward in many ways, as more time and effort is spent on following strict religious services than on economical or social advances. For many modern Amarrians moving around the realm of the Ardishapur-family is like taking a trip back in time. Yet Idonis has met with surprisingly little internal unrest in his time. This is attributed both to the ingrained willingness of the populace there to live by the old customs and not the least by the iron grip Idonis holds over his subjects – an iron grip made of silver to boost!
Jamyl is one of very few female heiress’ in the history of the Amarr Empire. Not only that, but she is also one of the more belligerent and aggressive of the heirs. Early on she became renown for her lust for battle and her father secured a command post within the Amarr military when she was still in her early twenties. By 30 she had established herself as a fearsome fighter, never shirking from an encounter; as well as a resourceful and cunning leader. In her time Jamyl has served both as Commander of the Imperial Fleet and as War Minister, in both cases the first time a woman has held such a position.
Jamyl’s views about the world are very the same as those of most military leaders through the ages - she sees the world in black and white and is totally convinced that the Amarr Empire is the greatest of the empires. She firmly believes that it was a big mistake to renounce the Reclaiming, the effort to conquer the whole world, and it is widely understood that if she would ever become empress (there has ever only been one Amarr empresses in the past) the empire would turn sharply from its current policy of peace and compromising to a much more aggressive and expansionist one.
