Sarrelix.
A desert world.
A dead world.
But it was one of the few outposts that watched an agri world system, constantly reporting any abnormal readings which could endanger the important production works of the system. It was ironic that the reason that the guardsmen there would soon be dead was because they apparently weren’t doing there jobs well enough. The Chaos fleet had been slowly approaching the planet for over a week now. They had been unhindered for the whole of their approach and finally reached the planet.
Bloated ugly transport ships thundered down from low orbit. As their brake thrusters fired they turned sand to glass and finally settled.
Giant landing planks clanked down and disciplined ranks of warriors marched out. A few warriors set out into the desert, disappearing into the heat haze of the planet. The warriors wore dark blue suits of power armour, the only thing of any color was a grotesque winged skull.
After a while, another warrior descended from the ship. He was
different from the others, larger, deadlier. His armour shimmered
abnormally in the heat of the planet. He had a massive power claw on his left hand, its deadly energy field turned off for the time being.
“Report”
His booming voice lingered for far longer than normal as a warrior
detached from the ranks of warriors. He ran to the large warrior and knelt.
“My lord, the scouts have reported the outpost abandoned, they say
there is blood everywhere and some sort of fungus covering the
outpost. And…”
He didn’t get to finish his sentence, a unnatural scream filled their helmets. Several warriors fell to their knees. Then as soon as it had begun it stopped.
The larger warrior, who had not even flinched through all of this
marched back to the ship.
“Recall the scouts and unchain Flux. We have a planet to purge.”
Flux roared as his keepers released his chains from their wall hooks. The walls were scratched and dented and the floor was slick with the blood from the slaves needed to keep Flux calm during the orbital descent. Flux´s cell was situated deep within the bowels of a heavy duty transport shipwhich was primarily used for hauling tanks.
Flux ponderously walked out of his cell, his weaponless arms hanging limply by his side. Finally they got him outside. The dreadnought sinked slightly into the soft sand before adjusting itself. Lifting cranes were wheeling out his weapons and lowering them into position. His keepers quikly chained him outside the transport vessel, he would be released soon.
Rior observed his forces getting into position. Two squads of Chaos space marines were in the center, squad Ignus And Thorn´s squad. After Ignus had been slain by a space marine librarian the squad had been falling further and further into the harsh embrace of the blood god, preferring close combat over ranged combat. Thorn however was still very much alive and used a completely different tactic. All of his squad had long range weaponry except for him, he wielded a power claw not unlike Riors, though not of the same craftmansship.
The third dropship, which had been silent since its landing, opened. A baleful green glow shone out as five cloaked figures emerged. They seemed to glide just above the ground as they silently made their way to Rior. Allsorts of limbs protruded from their misshapen bodies.
Rior could hear them in his head, whispering and clawing at his consciousness but he dismissed them from his mind and turned his will unto Lorax, which he knew was still in there somewhere.
“Lorax, you will support from the right, understood?!”
A figure broke from the small group and took of its hood. It had the helmet of a marine but a long stemmed eye poked out of one socket. A rasping voice filled Riors head.
“Understood… my lord”
That last part had a hint of sarcasm in it. All as one the rest of the figures threw of their cloaks. They looked like deformed marines, each and every one with protruding limbs ending in wicked spikes and barbs. Their faces were warped into menacing grins and they sported fangs the size of a finger. They all silently glided to the left flank and took up positions.
Suddenly the scream was heard again, though noone reacted as dramatically as the last time. On the horizon dust was being thrown up and an occasional animal like bellow could be heard.
Rior walked to the front of the battleline turning to face his relatively small force. All eyes were on him.
“Aim for the head and neck, target the larger ones as they are the controllers. Do not be fooled by their looks, they may look like the noble creatures that inhabit the Ether but they are nowhere near their greatness. Serve me well today and we march to Karrathia. But if you fail me, then your souls will be the plaything of the gods.”
Rior took his place between The two squads of space marines. With a loud “Clunk” the weapons were attached to Flux´s arm emplacements and he walked towards the right flank. A ship slave wasn´t quick enough and was caught in his grip, Flux crushed the slaves body and let the blood wash over him, it bubbled on his armour plates and disappeared.
Dozens of Tyranids thundered towards their prey. In the front were Hormagaunts backed up by scores of Termagants. Finally came the big hitters, A Hive tyrant, some Warriors and a massive Carnifex. In the air Gargoyles screeched and glided along with the swarm.
They were all that was left from a rogue spore that landed there over three months ago. They had made their way to the only food source on the planet and had moved on.
Until they had sensed more….
As they came over the last big hill they saw their target. Lots of tasty canned food. The gaunts moved unnaturaly fast seeking what cover they could get from the sanddunes and rocks that were strewn about the desert. The larger creatures stayed behind the outpost hugging it for cover.
Rior barked out commands and the whole chaos force was on the move. Flux managed to quell his psychotic temper and marched onwards. The Harbingers glided onwards keeping to the left flank and in the cover of the small oasis. The two squads moved forward. Ignus veered to the right, hoping to claim the outpost. Thorn went left exploiting the gap to lay down fire. Lord Rior advanced with Ignus.
Flux cycled his ammo loaders and a targetted a large group of bugs who were just out of cover of the outpost. A Bolt of plasma hurtled in their direction but it slammed into a sand dune on the way and didn´t cause any casualties.
The Hormagaunts on the far left flank scuttled forward using the large rocks in the area as partial cover. The Termagants did the same. The Gargoyles shrieked as they landed in cover of the palms in the oasis. As one gargoyle was landing it caught its wing on a palm and was impaled on a jagged tree branch. The Warriorss lumbered forward into the gap between the oasis and the outpost lining up a shot with the oncoming Marines. The second brood of Hormagaunts and the Hive Tyrant moved into the building, clambering over broken support beams and through broken windows. The Carnifex moved ponderously behind the Warriors its massive claws dripping with corrosive acid. The Warriors opened fire on squad Ignus but the organic ammunition proved useless against their armour.
The Chaos Warriorss saw the swarm unfolding before them and planted their boots grimly in the sand. Flux strafed to the left his auto targetters accquiering targets as he moved. The Harbingers glided silently further right and squad Ignus rushed forward banking left at the last moment seeking cover in the woods. Flux felt the blood pound in his ruined skull as he went into a fire frenzy. The barrel of his plasma cannon glowed as he fired two bolts of plasma in quick succession. They both slammed into the Hormagaunt brood scattering limbs and organic goo everywhere. Thorn´s squad wasn´t about to let Flux score better than them and opened fire into the outpost. Bolter fire tore up the walls of the outpost shredding Hormagaunts with eerie accuracy. The Lascannon gunner opened fire into the building but only managed to hit a lizard that was perched ontop of the roof. As the marine carrying the missile launcher saw this he went into a laughing frenzy sending a frag missile directly into the side of the building. Rior walked over to the gunners who looked down at their feet in shame. He slapped the back of their heads
“What the frag do you think you two are doing?! Aim for the enemy not the building!”
Rior took his place back at the side of the squad reminding himself to discipline those two after the battle.
The Harbingers had moved almost to the edge of the oasis now. They cackled as their eyes started to glow. Beams of daemonic energy stabbed into the small forest finding their mark in the soft flesh of the gargoyles. Lorax lifted his heavily mutated arm and a bolt of plasma shot from the intigrated pistol, the bolt whipped between the palm trees and impacted in the skull of a gargoyle.
Casualties were beginning to mount up for the Tyranids and yet no Marine had bit the dust. It looked grim for the bugs.
The Hormagaunts far left growled as they climbed over the rocky landscape to reach the thing that was always shooting at them. The Termagants moved right targetting Thorns´s squad. The Hormagaunts in the building rushed out followed closely by the Hive Tyrant. The Warriors left the cover of the woods and set their sights on squad Ignus, followed closely by the carnifex. The Gargoyles leveled their Fleshborers at the Harbingers.
All of as sudden the whole battlefield came alive. Organic weaponry was being blasted by almost every Tyranid unit capable. The Termagants fired their Devourers at Thorn´s squad but nothing penetrated their armour. The Hive Tyrant fired his massive Venom cannon at Thorns´s squad blasting two marines from their feet. They came down about 5 meters behind the rest of the squad, big craters blasted into their chest plates. The Warriors opened up with fire of their own but squad Ignus dodged most of it and the rest just pattered like rain on their armour. The Gargoyles shot their lethal projectiles at the Harbingers and managed to bring one of them down, the organic ammunition dissolving the possessed flesh releasing the daemon within.
The Hormagaunts on the far left bounded towards the dreadnought who only now released the body of the slave he had consumed. The Hormagaunts started jabbing their claws at the dreadnought, trying to find a weak spot. Inside the amniotic sack, litanies of hate formed on Flux´s ruined lips. Flux´s response was explosive, his massive claw pounded rather than cut the Tyranids down. He grabbed a tyranid that was gnawing on his smoke launchers and slammed it into the rock next to him. On the other side of the battlefield the Tyranid Warriors slammed into Squad Ignus. The squad realised its folly of not having charged them first but brought up their chainswords regardless. The Warriors were a tornado of claws as they tore through no less than four marines. The Marines gritted their teeth and started hacking at the remainder of the Warriors. Together they brought one down, their chainswords biting into its chitinous armour. As the Warrior fell, the rest of squad Ignus felt a hint of desperation as nearly half their squad had been wiped out in one go, but then they saw their Lord defiantly spreading his arms infront of the massive Hive Tyrant. Invigourated by their Lords show of defiance they revved up their chainswords and pressed on.
On the other side of the oasis the Gargoyles lept through the palm canopy. Another Gargoyle got snagged on a tree branch its flimsy wings breaking as it fell to the ground. The Gargoyles flew into the Harbingers, their claws digging into their flesh, but they paid it no heed. As the last Gargoyle landed, the possessed marines unleashed a barrage of claw attacks. Their claws sliced easily through the weak flesh of the Gargoyles. Lorax roared in triumph as the last Gargoyle slumped down on the ground.
Rior stood up. The marines blasted apart by the Hive Tyrant had been standing right infront of him, and he had been thrown back by the force of the impact. He picked up a small Tyranid organism that lay on the ground. It was a pitiful thing, its body only made to sustain for a few secondss as ammunition. He craned his neck up into the sky and spread his arms. He muttered an ancient litany taught to him by the warp entity Schlaremos. The only ones who really knew what was happening were the Harbingers who started gibbering incoherently as they glided to the aid of squad Ignus.
Rior ended the Rite of Summoning and squashed the alien lifeform. A loud thunderclap rang across the battlefield. Rior pointed with his power claw at a spot to the left of him. A tear in reality formed on that spot and five blurred forms jumped out. Slowly the forms came into focus as reality settled around them. They where heavily muscled creatures. They bore large bloodstained axes and wore ancient armour. They had bloodred skin, large hooves and manes that had formed into spines because of dried blood.
Rior spoke something in a long forgotten and damned language. The creatures simply nodded and turned towards the Tyranids.
Rior grinned.
“The battle isn´t over yet. Blast them apart.”
The Harbingers ran up to support squad Ignus as Rior gave the order to fire. Thorns´s squad targetted the hulking form of the Hive Tyrant. The ground was torn up by bolter fire but only one bolt found its mark in the thick shell of the Hive Tyrant. The lascannon gunner, now determined to make up for his mistakes, fired and scored a perfect hit. The Hive Tyrant reeled back by the force of the impact. The marine with the missile launcher didn´t fare as well, blasting apart more of the outpost. He hung his head in shame once more. Rior blasted at the Hive Tyrant with his pistol as well but his bolts were like small flies to the Tyrant.
With a bellow the Bloodletters charged the Hormagaunts. Their warp forged Hellblades cut through the living armour of the Tyranids like a meltatorch through plasteel. The Bloodletters rampaged through the ranks of Tyranids and no bloodletter fell in the Tyranid counter attack.
On the left flank Flux was busy ripping apart more of the Hormagaunts. They didn´t seem to be faring too well against him. With one mighty sweep of his claw he cut down three Gaunts. On the other side of the battlefield the Harbingers rushed to the rescue of squad Ignus slamming into the Warriors. The Warriors were busy ripping into squad Ignus.
Linth knew he was going to die, but that didn´t matter. He brought up his chainsword and blocked a downward thrust to his throat. All around him his squad members were being cut down. He slashed his sword across the Warriors breastplate then reversed his grip on the sword and slashed it through its leg. The Warrior shrieked at him and lunged with its two huge talons coming at him. Linth blocked the first talon but the second caught him in the side. Linth coughed up blood as the second spike plunged into his breastplate and through his secondary heart. He gurgled a smile and shot the Warrior point blank in the face. The Warrior reeled backwards from the blow, dropping the dead Marine. Its lower jaw had been blown clear off and its tongue hissed around its exposed mouth cavity.
The Warriors cut down the rest of squad Ignus the last Marine was caught in the jaws of a Warrior and was quikly seared in two by the digestive acids.
The Harbingers now answered for themselves. The Harbingers moved fluently between the Warriors. The speed of their attack was unbelivable. All that was left was a pile of sliced and diced flesh. The Harbingers laughed manically as they overran straight into the Carnifex.
The Tyranid tactics seemed to be getting desperate as the Hormagants ran forward and opened fire. Buzzing insect projectiles zipped past the Hormagaunts and impacted in Thorns´s squad. Unbeliavably one Marine fell, a bug burrowing through his neck armour.
On the left Flux decimated the last of the Hormagaunts and screamed in rage as he saw there were no more. The ancient dreadnought was covered in ichor and random parts of Tyranid anatomy.
The Bloodletters continued to hack apart Hormagaunts and only one fell to their scythelike claws. The Hive Tyrant barred its teeth and launched itself into combat with the Bloodletters. After only a few demoralising seconds the bloodletters were gone back to the warp, brooding the day they left their flank open to a Hive Tyrant.
Combat between the Carnifex and the Harbingers was stepped up a notch. The Harbingers playfully stripped the Carnifex of most of its outer shell, leaving two large gashes in his chest armour. The Carnifex roared its frustration at these irritating pieces of food and made wide sweeps with its massive claws. His claws passed through Lorax, he managed to phase out just in time, though the rest of his group wasn´t as lucky. A fountain of blood erupted from the bodies of the Possessed. The Carnifex had cleaved three of them in two and their bodies slumped to the side as their daemonic inhabitants returned to the Warp.
The Hormagants ran forward aiming their Devourers at Thorns´s squad releasing a volley of insect projectiles but none made their mark. The remainder of the Hormagaunts charged Thorns´s squad But they last three were clubbed to death by the missile launcher gunner and two of his fellow marines. The Hive Tyrant smashed into the side of Thorn´s squad.
The beast was among them.
Rior stepped up flexing his claw and met the deadly charge head on. The Hive Tyrant fought with martial skill that surpassed even Riors and he had a difficult time deflecting the beasts attacks. He jabbed his claw into its chest, the lethal energy field of his claw shearing a sizable chunk of the beast away. The Tyrant answered by plunging one of its talons directly through Riors thigh. Rior screamed in pain as the talon smashed his reinforced bone structure apart. The Beast closed in for the kill its multi fanged mouth opening and digestive acids dripping out. Riors visioned blurred as the Tyrants venom overwhelmed his system. But just at the last moment he came to his senses and saw the Tyrants head drawing near. With a mighty bellow and with a srength far surpassing an ordinary space marine, he drew the claw out of his leg and backhanded the Tyrant with his pistol. The Tyrant was thrown to the side. Rior used this lapse in its defenses to plunge his claw through its exposed neck. His claw dug deeply into the Beasts neck as ichor flowed out of the gaping wound. The Tyrant shook Rior off and he was thrown several meters away. The Tyrant slumped to the ground and a exhaled a gust of air. Thorn smashed his power claw into the head of the Tyrant although Rior knew the beast was dead.
Lorax was having equal luck with the Carnifex. Lorax stabbed his claws deep into the flesh of the Carnifex and clambered onto its back. The Carnifex roared as it tried to reach him. Lorax closed his eyes and channeled his symbiote daemon into the roaring beast. The daemon touched the mind of the creature briefly and then the Carnifex went silent. It´s burned out eye sockets smoked as it crumpled in on itself.Lorax jumped off triumphant, dusted himself off, and strolled back to the transport vessel.
Flux screamed in its pshycotic fury, unleashing another blast of
plasma into the retreating Tyranids. A squad of Chaos space marines were blasting apart the remainders of the hive tyrant and its larger companion (Carnifex). You can never be too sure when dealing with these creatures. Lord Rior Von Koln disengaged the energy field on his power claw. He glanced down on the wound on his leg. It wasn’t too bad.
A quick glance across the field of battle showed him the carnage that had been wreaked here. Dead marines were everywhere, alien organisms eating them up from inside. Dead Tyranids littered the ground, still twitching in their death throes. This planet belonged to chaos now, and soon the whole system would burn.
The only thing that bothered Rior was…Where the frag did those
Tyranids come from?!
