Desert Combat air vehicles – .3 Preview
By: F|uxx – 4/1/03
I got a chance to get a sneak peak at the Desert combat .3 alpha, with the goal to bring you all the goods on the planes and helicopters in it. So sit back, get a drink, and have a read. The preview features 25 exclusive screenshots of DC viewable by just clicking on the links in the text.
Desert Combat is the biggest mod for Battlefield 1942. Set in current times, Desert Combat focuses on battles in and around the Middle East. From Iraq to Somalia, you'll find yourself all over the globe. It takes almost all weapons and vehicles currently in BF1942, and replaces them with some really awesome vehicles to drive and weapons to shoot. In this article, us at BF1942AF will take a look at the air vehicles of Desert Combat. This includes jets, and even helicopters! So sit back, relax, and learn about the air vehicles of Desert Combat.
AC-130 Gunship
The AC-130 gunship is by far the coolest offensive weapon ever to grace the skies of my computer. Essentially, you take a normal C-130 cargo plane, strap a bunch on cannons and miniguns to the side, have it circle a target, laying down death from above. In Desert Combat .3, this is no different.
The DC AC-130 features 6 positions. 1st position is the pilot. I can sum up flying this beast in one word. Patience. Imagine a B-17 that has twice the turning radius; that’s the AC-130. So, you’ll have to make a wide circle. It took me about 3-4 tries to line myself up to circle the east American outpost in El Alamein. Position 2 on the AC-130 is a howitzer that puts def guns to shame. This thing rips apart whatever is 50 feet from the crater it leaves in the ground. Positions 3 and 4 a miniguns that fire faster than MGs currently in BF1942. These are very cool, and take down infantry like nothing. Position 5 has another faster firing howitzer, that is about as powerful and a tank blast in DC. Position 6 puts you looking out the back, controlling the rear hatch. More people than just 5 can fit in the back of the AC-130, but there are only 5 static positions.
All of these people work in concert with each other. The pilot has a nifty feature where when you press primary fire, you look to your left (the side all the guns are on) through the window, with secondary fire calling for artillery. This lets all your people inside the AC-130 know where to shoot. The pilot then circles the target, while the gunners kill everything below. It’s the coolest thing ever.
F-16
The F-16 is pretty similar to the current public version. I think they made the rockets fire a little straighter, and slowed the plane down a bit. Other than that, it’s about the same.
A-10 Warthog
The A-10 has had some minor tweaks to it, which I will go over below. The splash damage from the A-10’s bombs has been decreased. The other important change with the A-10 is that they have introduced SnakeEye Bombs. Essentially, once the bombs are released, they deploys fins that slow the bomb's rate of forward momentum, thereby allowing you to carpet bomb at lower levels. You can't get too low, because the bombs are still very powerful, and will hurt your plane. So fly careful!
UH-60
The UH-60 Blackhawk is an interesting vehicle. It has a total of 6 seats. 1st one goes to the pliot who essentially just flys around, being able to look to the right and call for artillery using the exact same system as the one for the pilot in the AC-130 gunship. The co-pilot in the position 2 can also call for artillery just by looking at a target and left clicking. In position 3 is the crew chief who mans a minigun. Positions 4,5, and 6 are for passengers to hitch a ride. Essentially, the UH-60 Blackhawk will be used for transporting infantry and giving artillery positions to their team.
Apache
The only thing different about the Apache is some updated physics. It’s a little easier to fly, but it still takes some practice.
SU-25
The SU-25 is the opposition's counterpart to the A-10 Warthog. It flys about the same as the A-10, has a mean – yet not as powerfull – tank killing minigun on its nose, and drops 8 AS-7 bombs at a time. In the right hands, this thing is a beast. It is the prefect plane for carpet bombing home bases, armor columns, or just about anything that needs blowing up. The bombs drop a little slower than the B-17 in BF1942, so they are spread out more than I would like it, but they are powerful and deadly.
Mig 29
The Mig 29 is virtually the same thing.
Hind
The Hind is the opposition’s answer to the Apache and the Blackhawk. If an Apache and a Blackhawk had a child with a Russian egg donor, you get this wonderful helicopter. The hind has a total of 6 seats. The pilot flies and has rockets and missiles almost identical to the Apache pilot. The copilot, also similar to the Apache, has a machine gun that he can point and shoot. Inside the belly of the Hind are seats for 4 passengers. The passengers in positions 3 and 4 can open and close the side doors of the helicopter. The Hind serves as a good attack/transport helicopter, combing the best attributes of the Apache and the Blackhawk.
Harrier
When I 1st saw video of the Harrier, I thought to myself, “That’s going to be a pain in the ass to fly.” To my surprise, I find the harrier easier to fly than the helicopters. Basically, the harrier works on the two ends of the throttle. Throttle all the way back means you hover. Hovering is actually quite easy, with roughly the same controls as the helicopters. If you roll too far to one side, however, you can roll over and have your thrust jets push you in to the ground. If you want to fly normally, just push the throttle full forward, and you fly around like a jet. For weaponry, the harrier features a normal machine gun on the nose, as well as the ability to drop two massive bombs. The bombs will blow the crap out of anything in their splash area.
